MUSCAT, NOV 2

Oman is seeking to strengthen the role of its capital market in driving economic diversification, attracting investment and supporting private sector growth as the Muscat Stock Exchange (MSX) hosts The Network Forum Middle East 2026, bringing together regional and international financial institutions to discuss the future of capital markets.

The two-day forum, which commenced on November 2, is organised by MSX in collaboration with the Muscat Clearing and Depository Company (MCDC). It provides a platform for financial institutions and market participants to exchange expertise and explore opportunities to enhance market infrastructure, expand investment products and strengthen regional financial integration.

The discussions come amid Oman's efforts to develop a more efficient and competitive capital market capable of mobilising domestic and foreign investment, diversifying financing sources for businesses and directing capital towards productive economic sectors. These objectives align with Oman Vision 2040, particularly its focus on economic diversification, private sector development and improving the investment environment.

The first day's sessions addressed regulatory developments, financial market modernisation, Oman's economic outlook and innovation in Gulf capital market products. Discussions also examined the opportunities and challenges facing regional financial institutions.

Technology featured prominently on the agenda, with participants exploring asset tokenisation, digital assets, custody services and the growing applications of artificial intelligence, automation and data analytics in financial markets.

These developments are increasingly shaping the financial services industry, offering opportunities to improve operational efficiency, strengthen transparency and introduce innovative investment solutions. Modernising trading, clearing, settlement and post-trade services is also essential to enhancing the competitiveness of Oman's capital market and strengthening its connectivity with international markets.

Badr al Hinai, Chief Operating Officer of MSX, said: “Hosting the forum reflects the exchange's commitment to positioning Oman as a regional hub for dialogue and knowledge-sharing among financial institutions.”

He noted that the forum's discussions on financial innovation, digital assets, artificial intelligence and regional market integration reflect key developments shaping the future of capital markets. He added that the exchange of expertise would support efforts to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of Oman's capital market in line with its strategic objectives and Oman Vision 2040.

From his part, Mohammed al Abri, Chief Executive Officer of MCDC, said: “The forum provides an important opportunity to strengthen Oman's presence in regional and international discussions on financial market development.”

He highlighted the importance of advancing market infrastructure and developing clearing, settlement and post-trade services, noting that digital transformation and financial innovation are becoming increasingly important to building interconnected, resilient and investment-friendly markets.

The second day, scheduled for November 3, will focus on regional market integration, cross-border investment and improving post-trade efficiency. Discussions will also examine the transition towards a T+1 settlement cycle, under which securities transactions are settled within one business day.

The move is expected to improve settlement efficiency, reduce transaction-related risks and enhance the investor experience, while requiring further development of operational, technological and regulatory systems.

The forum underscores the growing importance of capital market development in Oman's economic transformation. Beyond facilitating securities trading, a well-developed market can provide alternative financing channels for businesses, mobilise savings, attract investment and support the expansion of productive sectors.
